You swing open the firm, metal door covered in colorful sex toy advertisements. You see familiar brand names: We-Vibe, Wicked, COLT, staring at you as you walk into the adult shop. As you step through the entrance and onto their fuzzy, dark-colored carpet your eyes flit across the many shelves and sections. You see so many toys with different colors, shapes, names, and sizes. You try to take everything in as you look around but see nothing!
It is very common to get overwhelmed in a sex toy store! If you’ve been through this, this article is for you.
You’re standing on the carpet wondering where to go first. We can do this together, let’s get started!

We just think they’re great examples*
Dildo Toys
Majority of peoples minds will first go to dildos.
Internal Pleasure
Dildos are phallic-shaped sex toys used for insertion/penetration. They vary in materials, size, color, and function. Dildos may have an internal vibrating mechanism or may have holes for vibrating bullets. They are often used for solo-play but also very popular among couples.
Dildos come in a large array of sizes, small discreet dildos are often called ‘lipstick dildos’ or ‘lipstick vibrators’. Dildos do not have a size limit and can often be customized to an individual’s preference. Check out Lovehoney’s Oh! Kiss me vibrator for an example.
Double penetrating dildos are specialized dildos used to stimulate two internal areas at once (most common the anus and vagina). These are typically shaped like a J or a U so they can be inserted into both areas simultaneously. See CALexotic’s Over & Under Power Stud Vibe to the right as an example.
Double-sided dildos, also known as double-ended dildos, are two dildos connected at their base (double-headed) creating one long dildo that could be used on two individuals at once, or very deep penetration. Doc Johnson’s doubleheader 18″ dildo provided as an example.
Squirting dildos are dildos with a built-in ‘cum-tube’. These are tubes that run through the dildo and are attached to pumps or syringes that can be filled with the user’s favorite cum lube or even urine. When the user wants the sex toy to squirt they just need to squeeze the pump or syringe. See Doc Johnson’s “The Amazing Squirting Realistic® Cock” to the right.
Ovipositor dildos are a type of fantasy dildo that is filled with eggs or other similar fantasy subject matter that can be deposited into the vaginal/anal/oral cavity during play.
The eggs are typically made from gelatin or flexible silicone and are not intended for extended wear. They are injected with the same idea as cumming/squirting dildos. It can be a pump or a syringe attached to the sex toy, filled with the liquid (or eggs) of the user’s choice and they are good to go whenever the time is right!
Ovipositors are great for those into science fiction or anime kinks as it allows a much more interactive play experience. Imagine being impregnated by your favorite alien.. this is the future!
Pegging/Harness Dildos are dildos with a magnetic or thicker base that can be used with a harness. The dildo is inserted into a wearable harness that can be used in partner play.
Harness dildos commonly overlap with other types of dildos. Many fantasy dildos can be used within a harness and some purchase strap-on harnesses that allow a second dildo for double penetration.
External Pleasure
Dildos can also be used externally as a personal message that typically focuses on labial or clitoral stimulation.
A popular dildo is the rabbit dildo, a dildo characterized by little rabbit ‘ears’ that branch off the dildo’s shaft. Rabbit dildos provide both internal and external stimulation. The phallic portion stimulates the vaginal walls and internal portion of the clitoris (commonly known as the g-spot) and the rabbit ears vibrate to provide the external clitoris with stimulation.
It is also common for individuals to use dildos as personal massages and massage their external labia/clitoris with the shaft rather than use it for penetrative purposes.
Psychological Pleasure
As you can see, there are many ways to use dildos depending on the individual’s preferences.
Sensational Pleasure
Other potential uses involve the shape of the sex toy itself. Some individuals get off to the idea and shape of the toy rather than direct physical stimulation.
Some people also have shape preferences. It is common for people to prefer the feeling of fullness and look for thick, or long dildos.
Knotted dildos are dildos with a large bulb or ‘knot’ along the shaft. Knotted dildos may have the bulb anywhere in the shaft, but is commonly found before the base or mid-shaft. Many individuals enjoy the stretching and/or full sensation the knot provides. See out knotted dildo: Hellhound.
Tiered Dildos are dildos that gradually widen with each stage or ‘tier’. These dildos are often appealing to individuals who like the feeling of fullness and stretching as well. They allow the individual to go as deep as full as they would like, without having to buy multiple sex toys. They are also useful for those who are working up to larger toys. Check out our dragon bone dildo as an example.
Fantastical Pleasure
Individuals may also get pleasure from inserting a dildo that resembles a personal fantasy, for example, an erotic fantasy involving a mystical beast ravaging them in their bedroom.
Personal Massager Toys
Personal massagers are typically sex toys that are used to solely stimulate the external clitoris/labia via vibrating or pulsing sensations. These toys include discreet small vibrators like lipstick vibrators and finger vibrators to the full massage wand.
Finger vibrators are small bullets fitted into a sleeve that resembles a finger. Imagine a glove with a bullet in the finger. These vibrators can be purchased with different tip textures for different sensations. Finger vibrators typically rely on old-fashioned watch batteries, but there are many on the market which include built-in rechargeable batteries.
Wand vibrators are much larger and less discreet massagers with bulbous tips. They provide a much stronger sensation as they have a powerful motor built-in rather than relying on a small bullet. Wands tend to be much pricier than finger vibrators because they can often be customized with new heads, additional attachments, varying speeds, and sizes. Some wands will require two hands and plug into the wall so you won’t have to worry about batteries running out.
Oral Sex Simulator Toys
This is a category of sex toys designed to mimic oral sex or ‘Cunnilingus’. These sex toys focus on the external portion of the clitoris. These toys are often preferred over strictly penetrative sex toys as the external clitoris has more nerve endings (more sensitive to touch).
Suction Toys
Suction toys are sex toys designed to simulate the suction from your partner’s mouth during oral sex. These sex toys often look like thick handheld wands with a suction cup at the end. They can be found in many shapes and colors.
Suction toys are designed to create a vacuum around the clitoris. This vacuum creates the suction feeling and gets more blood in the clitoris making it more sensitive.
The suction can be provided manually by squeezing the toy or other toys that have built-in motors that provide uniform and gentle suction.
If you cannot decide between a suction toy and a personal vibrator, you also have the choice of a ‘Suction Vibe‘ which combines the best of the two sex toys.
Wheel Toys
Oral Wheels look like a windmill or chainsaw of tounges that fit into the palm of your hand. Resembling fan blades, they are a circle of tounges attached to a motor at the center. These tongue blades spin simulating a constant licking motion. The idea is the wheel spins and this licking motion stimulates the clitoris by replicating a tongue during oral sex.
Urethral Plugs/Dilator Toys
Urethral Plugs are long phallic-shaped tubes that are inserted into the urethral opening.
Urethral Dilators are also long phallic-shaped tubes that are inserted into the urethral opening. The difference is dilators are not typically meant for extended wear but to stretch or dilate the urethral opening.
This stretching or feeling of fullness can provide individuals with pleasure. They are sometimes used for double penetrative purposes.
See aisle 2: Urethral Dilation/Plugs for more information.
Vaginal Pump Toys
These are pumps that cover the vaginal area (or just the external clitoris) and create a vacuum by pumping out air. Think about the previously mentioned clitoral suction toys, just on a larger scale.
Pumping out the surrounding air stimulates the labia and/or clitoris by causing it to fill with blood. Many are turned on by the sucking sensation, but also because the blood-engorged area is much larger and more sensitive to any stimulation.
Vaginal pumps can be manual or motorized. They often look like a cup attached to a squeeze pump, but can also look a lot like a thick wand with a cup attachment. These cups can vary in textures, or lack texture all together. More expensive pumps can have interchangeable cups that can be switched out depending on your mood.
Speculum Toys
Yes, this is what it sounds like. Speculums are made of metal or hard plastic and are designed to be inserted to slowly stretch openings.
Functional Pleasure
Speculums can hold open the vaginal or urethral opening, this allows the opening to passively stay stretched freeing those very important hands for things like insertion or exploration.
Psychological Pleasure
The sensation of stretching can be very alluring to some individuals. A speculum allows the opening to stretch very gradually unlike the use of a tiered sex toy or dilator.
Speculums are common in BDSM Fetish play as it provides an interesting dynamic between the submissive and dominant partners. Stretching a partner’s opening may allow for a great sense of vulnerability on top of the pleasurable stretching feeling. Partner speculum play involves a lot of trust, and is not to be performed without care.
Orgasm Ball Toys
Orgasm balls have many names: kegel balls, ecstasy balls, ben-wa balls, love balls, jiggle balls, toner balls, etc. They are small balls, can be one or many intended to strengthen or train the vaginal/pelvic floor and walls. Check out Calexotics’ “Metallic weighted orgasm balls” for an example.
They come in different sizes and different weights for different needs. They are meant to be inserted into the vaginal opening and held inside via kegel muscles (pelvic/vaginal muscles).
Some orgasm balls have a string for easy removal, but many are loose balls made of various materials but most common are silicone or steel.
Many explain the feeling as tingly, or pressure in their vaginal cavity. Many find the experience very pleasurable and choose to insert the orgasm balls as a sexual act rather than just exercise. Many use the pleasurable feeling to prepare for sex (foreplay), keep them inserted during clitoral play, or enjoy them during anal play.
If you want to read more about orgasm ball practices check out this article by Healthline.
Masturbator Toys
Masturbators come in many different forms. Individuals are unique and complex so masturbators are becoming increasingly complex in order to keep up.
Penis Strokers
The most common style of masturbater is the penis stroker. These are what people commonly think of when they think of a male sex toy. It is a fleshy material in a tube-like shape that the penis is inserted into and stroked. They range in size, color and texture, and function.
Examples of penis strokers are the original Fleshlight models, or pocket pussies (commonly known as small discreet penis stokers). Strokers focus on external stimulation of the penis’ shaft and head. You can buy different models for different functions: some focus their texture on the head and others on the shaft.
Manual Strokers are the typical fleshy, soft material tubes you would grab, insert the penis into, and manually stroke. There are also automatic strokers available on the market. Automatic stokers are designed to do the work while you lay and enjoy the pleasure.
Tenga eggs are specialized strokers made by Tenga, they cater to the penis’ head. These wildly popular eggs are small disposable discreet strokers that don’t stretch much further than the penis’ head/upper shaft. They are made of a translucent super stretchy elastomer (rubber) that wears down quickly but allows for a soft feel.
Many strokers can specialize in textures that mimic certain feelings like deep-throating, the inside of certain body areas, or sucking.
Stamina Trainers
Strokers are typically used strictly for pleasure or for stamina training. Stamina training is the continuous and deliberate delay of orgasm in order to practice controlling the orgasm. Someone would use a stroker to build towards the climax and just before climax stop and wait some time before building up again.
This edging technique is often used when an individual doesn’t feel they have enough endurance to last as long as they would like before reaching orgasm. Any sex toy can be used but strokers are very commonly used as they contain customizable textures and sizes.
Strokers are picked based on individual preferences of size, body part, function, material, texture, and price.
Body Part Simulator Toys
Body part simulators have the same concept as the stroker on a larger scale. These sex toys try to emulate certain body parts, but allow the penis to be inserted into a textured sleeve-like hole. Examples may include pussy and ass dolls.
An ass doll is exactly what it sounds like, a fleshy toy shaped like a life-like penetrable ass. The toy stimulates the penis’s shaft and head while also stimulating a fantastical pleasure by stimulating a real body part.
These sex toys are perfect for the individuals who have certain body part fetishes like breasts, feet, asses, etc.
Cock Ring Toys
Cock rings are rings that wrap around an area of the penis for a variety of purposes. The most common purpose is to restrict the penis’ blood flow. If a tight (narrower than the penis’ diameter) cock ring is worn while the penis is erect it prevents blood from flowing back into the body. This traps blood in the penis and it stays engorged.
Cock rings may be used by individuals who find it hard to stay erect during a session, or those who may want to stay erect for longer.
Cock rings are not just used as a sex aid but also a pleasure enhancer. The increased blood flow to the penis often increases the penis’ sensitivity and therefore feels more intense when stimulated.
Cock rings may also be used for aesthetic reasons, these tend to be much looser and therefore do not restrict blood flow. There are many fashionable or fun cock rings that can be used to spice up the bedroom!
Similarly, you can also find cock and ball rings. These cock rings are meant to wrap around the penis’ shaft and around the testicles. These are used for the same purpose as cock rings but with greater efficiency as they are often more restrictive.
Cock Loops
Cock loops are essentially the same as cock rings but instead of a solid O-ring, they are a string (typically made from silicone) fitted through a cinch. A cock loop is basically a less rigid but more adjustable cock ring which makes it great for beginners!
Cock and Ball Rings
Cock and Ball rings may be purchased as a single ring that everything squeezes through or multiple rings that separate the different parts of the genital area.
Cock rings come in different materials, sizes, and thicknesses. Many custom sex toy shops have many different sizes so you can choose depending on what you’re in the mood for!
Ball Stretchers
Ball stretchers are weighted cock rings designed to fit around the balls. These may be built-in predetermined weight or may allow for weight to easily be added via external clamps.
Ball stretchers use weight to pull the testicles downwards providing a stretching sensation.
They come in many sizes, styles and materials.
Penis Sleeve Toys
Penis sleeves are sex toys that are designed to cover the entire shaft or part of the shaft. These are basically penis koozies that change the look or feel of the penis. They are most often used to add texture or expanding feelings during penetrative sex.
The Furry community is known for its large costumes and fantasy-related play. It isn’t uncommon for individuals to buy penis sleeves that resemble their fursonas (their animal identity/persona) to help immerse themselves in the fantasy!
Penis Extenders
Penis extenders are a type of penis sleeve that is designed to add length or girth to the penis. These are most commonly used during penetrative sex to create a greater feeling of fullness. See Lovehoney’s “Mega Thick 2 Extra Inches Penis Extender with Ball Loop” for an example.
Glans Toys
These are sex toys made specifically to target the glans or head of the penis. These toys typically target the sensitive skin under or around the head like the frenulum (that super sensitive flap of skin connecting the head to the shaft).
Glans toys are usually rings or tubes that provide extra stimulation during masturbation or sex. They may have a texture for extra stimulation or just be tight and provide extra pressure in the right spot.
Urethral Dilation/Plug Toys
Urethral Plugs are long phallic-shaped tubes that are inserted into the urethral opening. This plug is the “Brooks Ball Sounding Plug” sold by The Chain Gang Body Jewelry.
Urethral Dilators are also long phallic-shaped tubes that are inserted into the urethral opening. The difference is dilators are not typically meant for extended wear but to stretch or dilate the urethral opening. For more information take a look at the “Hegar Urethral Sound Kit” also sold by The Chain Gang Body Jewelry. to the right.
Cum-through plugs are urethral plugs (like the Brooks Ball plug shown above) that include a hole running through the entire toy to allow semen to flow through during ejaculation. These are used by individuals who want to orgasm while still feeling the fullness or texture of the plug in their urethra. Without a cum-through plug the individual would need to remove the plug or dilator or risk health complications. They can also allow the passage of urine during extended wear without necessitating the removal of the toy. This is especially useful in certain cock cage designs. Find more in aisle 4: Control Play.
Plus come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. You can find many on the market which have different attachments to hold them in the urethral opening hands-free, to provide double penetration (anal and urethral), or even electrostimulation.
More about electrostimulation in aisle 5: stimulation play.
Testicle Clamp Toys
Testicular Clamps are very similar to ball rings (such as cock ball rings mentioned in the cock ring section). They clamp down on the testicle themselves or the skin behind the testicle forcing any blood into the testicle while simultaneously stretching the skin taught providing a more extreme stretched, pressure-filled pleasure.
Clamps come in a variety of sizes due to their function (both testicle, one, or just the skin around the testicles). They are often metal due to the need for strength and less flexible nature but can be purchased in many softer (and less cold) materials for less extreme play.
Penis Pump Toys
These are pumps that cover the penis and create a vacuum by pumping out air.
Pumping out the surrounding air stimulates creates a vacuum. The suction causes the penis to fill with blood. Many are turned on by the sucking sensation, but also because the blood-engorged area is much larger and more sensitive to any stimulation. This can lead to much intense sexual intercourse or masturbation.
Many put a cock ring on after using a penis pump to maintain the engorged erection. This can help individuals who struggle with maintaining erections.
Penis pumps can be manual or motorized. They often look like a cup (for just the head) or a long test tube (for the head and whole shaft) attached to a squeeze pump, but can also look a lot like a thick wand with a cup attachment. These cups can vary in textures, or lack texture all together. More expensive pumps can have interchangeable cups that can be switched out depending on your mood.
Hydro Pumps (like the Hydromax7 seen to the left) are a type of penis pump which uses water instead of air for maximum engorgement. These can sometimes be automatic machines with water in them or require you to sit in the bathtub (submerged) while in use.
Anal Plug Toys
Anal plugs are sex toys that are inserted into the anus for a period of time. They are designed to stay in the anal opening for an extended period of time and therefore typically have a flared based preventing the plug from falling into the body.
Anal plugs can have a variety of functions. Some are used for a feeling of fullness, some vibrate to stimulate during masturbation or sex, some aim to stretch the anal cavity to allow for more comfortable anal sex or large sex toy insertions.
Plugs come in various shapes and sizes to provide different feelings of fullness and or texture. Common shapes are bulbs, long/straight, thick/straight, or curved. Some plugs may even contain built-in holes to add your own bullet vibrators. Plugs are very vertical and usually very affordable.
If you are looking for something larger or more cylindrical like a dildo, check out Aisle 1’s dildo section for more information.
Tunnel Plugs
Tunnel plugs are anal plugs that have large holes spanning the entire toy. These toys are inserted into the anal opening to expand and replace it with the toy’s tunnel. These are typically used during penetration for a feeling of fullness in the bottom partner, provide a more unique texture to the partner on top or both simultaneously. They may also be used to hold the anus open during various types of insertion play.
Harness Plugs
Harness plugs are plugs that are designed to be used with a harness. These sex toys typically have unique bases that are more flared or shaped to fit within their specific brand of harness. Harnesses can be used to hold in the anal plugs for hands-free play, for long term wear, or as an accessory to partner control play.
Anal Bead Toys
Anal beads are long strings of connected spheres or ovals. They are similar to anal plugs as they are inserted into the rectum for their feeling of fullness or texture but they are not intended to be inserted for an extensive amount of time. Anal beads are designed to be inserted and slowly removed to provide a ‘bubbling’ sensation. The sensation is created as the anal opening opens and closes around each individual bead.
Prostate Probes/Massager Toys
Prostate Probes
Prostate Probes are basically anal plugs that are designed to stimulate the prostate (also known as the ‘p-spot’). These tend to be thinner, longer, and more curved than plugs as they need to be angled enough to reach the prostate gland (located deep inside a few inches above the shaft towards the belly). Check out Lovehoney’s “Pleasure Probe 10 Function Vibrating Prostate Massager” as an example.
Prostate Massgers
Prostate massagers are prostate probes that massage the prostate using a mechanical addition. For example, a prostate probe that has a motor inside that vibrates, pulses, or provides a milking motion. This milking motion is often described as a finger beckoning someone to come here. Check out Loveplug’s “stealth prostate massager” for an example!
Air Mask Toys
These are exactly what they sound like, masks designed to limit or control air for sexual purposes. They are typically paired with the kink ‘erotic asphyxiation’ also known as breath play.
Erotic asphyxiation is the intentional manipulation of air/the airway for sexual gratification. This can be done to oneself (autoerotic asphyxiation) or a partner.
Individuals with this kink often explain they enjoy the rush of excitement that comes with the risk and the rush from the oxygen returning. Some enjoy the feeling of having their consenting but submissive partner under their ultimate control.
Air masks come in a large variety of different materials, air flow regulators, and even locking mechanisms.
Gag Toyss
Gags are devices worn with the intention to literally gag the wearer and prevent various movements involving the jaw, tongue, and/or lips. Gags are often intended to prevent the wearer from speaking but gags are not simply muting devices.
Advanced gags are typically reserved for experienced kink players as they can be very dangerous. Gags are largely appealing due to the large power imbalance and shame/humiliation they can impose.
There are many types of gags, with all different properties for different kinks.
Ball Gags
Ball gags are what people typically think of when someone says the word ‘gag’. It is a solid ball or small object (typically made of rubber or silicone), attached to a horizontal strap that secures with a buckle. Non-solid balls are available if increased airflow is preferred.
The ball or small object is placed in the wearer’s mouth (typically behind the teeth) and secured around the head via the strap/buckle. The ball prevents airflow into the mouth, prevents movement in the jaw, and causes drooling.
Bit Gags
Bit gags are typically one solid horizontal bar attached to straps. The straps are designed to secure the bar between the wearer’s teeth forcing them to bite it if they close their mouth.
Bit gags resemble a horse’s bridle (the component in the horse’s mouth that the reins are attached to) are for this reason is often used in ‘pony play’.
Unlike the ball dad, the bit gag restricts less air and limits jaw motions. Bit gag wearers are usually able to speak but will find speech more difficult.
Forniphilic Gags (advanced)
Forniphilia is considered an extreme act where a submissive partner is forced (always consentingly) to take the role of an object (often furniture). Forniphilia is degrading by nature and is intended to humiliate or objectify the partner.
Forniphilic gags are gags that everyday objects can be attached to. As noted in the name forniphilic gags are intended to be used to further transform the submissive partner into an object. For example, an ashtray may be secured forcing the wearer to be a table for said ashtray while the dominant partner smokes.
Funnel Gags (advanced)
Funnel gags are similar to ball gags, but instead of a ball, a literal funnel is secured to the wearer’s mouth by straps or a mask. Air masks are often paired with funnel gag play as it further increases the wearer’s dependency on the funnel.
The funnel is often used to force the wearer to consume various fluids and is often used by individuals into waterplay.
Dildo/Pecker Gags (advanced)
Dildo or pecker gags are gags that resemble a phallic shape. These gags may be long or short depending on the wearer’s preferences. Shorter peckers are typically secured by straps similar to a ball gag, while the pecker sits in the wearer’s mouth. Longer peckers may be forced down the wearer’s throat and prevented from being consumed by a flared based or a large knot.
Dildo/pecker gags come in a large variety, some may limit jaw movement/speech depending on size.
Over-the-mouth Gags
Over-the-mouth (OTM) gags is a very generic term for gags of various materials that can be placed over the mouth. These gags are unlike the previous gags that are inserted into the mouth.
These may not completely limit speech unless tied quite tightly. Think of the stereotypical bad guy who wrapped the good guy up and tied a cloth around his mouth to stop him from talking his way out of the situation.
OTM gags include: muzzles, tape, balled up cloth gags.
OTM gags can be very beginner-friendly as they restrict less movement and can easily allow adequate airflow.
Ring Gags
Ring gags are similar to ball gags but have a ring rather than a solid ball held by horizontal straps. The ring is typically made of rigid material like steel to make sure it keeps its shape. Similarly, the ring may be replaced with a hollow tube to create a tube gag.
Ring gags increase airflow and tongue movement while still restricting the jaw. This allows the wearer more control and prevents less risk of choking. These gags also cause the wearer to drool uncontrollably as they cannot close their mouths.
Ring gags are often used to hold in an object or used to penetrate the wearing through the ring (dildos or the wearer’s genitalia may be forced through the ring).
Spider gags are a type of ring gag that has hooks that resemble spider legs to further secure the ring gag. These additional legs prevent the wearer from moving the ring gag (typically held by 2 horizontal straps).
Harness Gags
Harness gags are gags that are secured to the head via multiple straps buckling in various places around the head.
Harness gags allow for attachments such as blindfolds, or other restraints and may serve to further restrict the wearer with the multiple straps. For example, harness straps may be secured around the chin and around the forehead/eyes to further prevent jaw/facial movements.
Harness gags also allow for a very extreme aesthetic and which may be pleasing to a controlling/dominating partner.
Cock Cage Toys
Cock cages are full ‘cages’ that fit around the entire penis. These most often have a mechanism (a detachable cock ring or sling) that loops around the testicles to hold the cage in place. Many cock cages are designed to be used with a locking mechanism (a metal or plastic lock) so the wearing is unable to stimulate themselves physically and is at their partner’s mercy.
Cock cages are typically metal or silicone. Metal allows for a rigid, solid cage that cannot be tampered with while a silicone cage is more comfortable for long-term wear or preferred when a metal detector may be present (airports). If you’re looking for something without metal, make sure to pick up a plastic lock as well!
Cock cages physically place the power in the partner’s hands as they hold the key. Many cages do not allow for any physical contact or even let the wearer obtain an erection. This allows the keyholder to tease their caged partner until they allow release. Many explain the release after long sessions of edging or teasing using a cock cage as euphoric.
Restraint Toys
Restraints are sex toys/tools designed to restrict movement or the wearers senses.
Blindfolds
Blindfolds are exactly what they sound like, a material of any sort which is draped or tied around the wearer’s eyes to prevent them from seeing.
Taking away the sense of sight allows for a very intimate and sensual experience as it heightens all other senses and adds the aspect of the unknown. The blindfold wearer is left in a very vulnerable state that leaves their wellbeing and comfort in the hands of their partner.
This is very pleasurable to both the sense-heightened blindfold wearer and a partner who gets off to control or extreme trust. Blindfolds pair nicely with all control and sensual play as they follow the theme of restriction. Like most restriction play, the power imbalance and a sense of excitement add to the pleasure.
Handcuffs
Handcuffs are a classic sex toy that restricts movement in a less extreme way. Handcuffs are typically metal, and often covered in a warm or fuzzy material for comfort. These cuffs are wrapped around the partner’s wrists or may be used around one limb to secure the partner to an object (like a bedframe).
Handcuffs allow power to be placed in the key holder’s hands but don’t entirely limit or subdue the partner as 2-3 limbs may still be free to ‘fight’ the keyholder.
Handcuffs are great for those beginning with control play as they are very versatile and allow a great range of control play. This allows one to start small and slowly increase the restraint level when feeling more comfortable.
Silk or Nylon Rope (Western Bondage)
Rope of any kind can be used for rope bondage play. Rope bondage is the act of using a rope to tie your partner while intending to restrict or greatly limit their movement. Many individuals prefer silk rope as it provides a more comfortable and sensual feel. Western rope bondage typically focuses on the practical nature of ropes (tying them in knots) to prevent movement.
Rope play is very versatile as one can purchase many ropes of many sizes, colors and materials. Smaller ropes can be used in place of handcuffs for those with sensitive skin, or you can buy one long rope and cattle tie your partner. As you can see, a rope can also be great for role-playing!
Japanese Rope (Japanese Bondage)
Japanese ropes are less stretchy and less forgiving ropes designed to wrap and restrain the human body. They can be purchased in various colors and lengths but are typically made of braided natural fibers.
Often used while practicing the art of ‘Shibari’ or ‘Kinbaku’ which is Japanese rope bondage. It is a form of restriction that focuses on wrapping the body rather than just making knots. The art has a large aesthetic/sensuality focus rather than a strict focus on the practicality of restraining a partner.
Japanese bondage is much more than just restraint or control play as it allows for a sensual experience of exploration and intimacy. It allows one to focus on the beauty of the rope and their partner while getting their controlling rocks off!
If this sounds like it would be up your alley I would greatly recommend checking out Autostraddle’s Shibari 101 article.
Bondage Tapes
Bondage tape is a roll of PVC tape about 2-3 inches thick that only sticks to itself.
Bondage tape is similar to rope as it is intended to be a practical way to limit a partner’s movement but does not need knots.
A lot of tape would be needed to completely subdue a partner as bondage tape is less secure than rope but it is quite strong and doesn’t break very easily. This may be a good entry point for those who want to see how they feel being tied up or those who never learned their sailor knots!
Restraint Systems
Restraint systems are sets of straps used to limit your partner’s movement. Straps can be for only arms/legs or full body systems.
These systems are great for individuals who want to see their partner squirm under their control or those who enjoy a stretching sensation.
Bed restraints are systems that wrap around the arms and are fed under your bed or mattress and connect to the feet. The cuffs that attach to you/your partner’s limbs can be tightened and loosened to obtain as much movement as the dominant partner desires. Check out PinkCherry’s “Beneath the Sheets Premium Bed Restraints” shown on the left.
Door restraints are a similar concept but as designed to latch onto a door instead of a mattress. Like the bed system, you could adjust for different movement levels but door systems often require the partner to be suspended off the ground with their back on the door. This position may not be for everyone as it may strain the cuffed areas.
If interested in suspension take a look in Aisle 7 for a sex swing!
Spreader Bars
Spreader bars are rigid bars made of metal or wood with cuffs/rope/chains attached to both ends. The cuffs are attached to a partner’s limbs (usually the legs/feet/knees) to keep them spread apart.
They are intended to prevent the wearer from interrupting the controller’s play-time, the wearer cannot refuse whichever part the controller wants to access.
Stimulation Play Toys
Stimulation play involves manipulating your own or your partner’s sensations via various tools for sexual gratification.
The sensational sex toys explored below are often paired with restraints (Aisle 4) for the ultimate control experience. Some may prefer the use of a blindfold to increase their skin’s sensitivity while others prefer to restrain their squirming partner so they cannot interfere.
Feather Toys
Feathers or sometimes called feather ticklers are one or more feathers bound together on a stick or string. Think of a feather cat toy or a feather duster.
A feather toy is used to caress or tickle your partner’s skin. It is similar to how light kisses or touches would stimulate skin but even more stimulating due to the feather’s surface area and flexible nature.
Feathers can be long and hard like a quill, or soft short, and fluffy like down. Different feathers and pressure variations can provide different sensations making it very easy to cater to a partner’s desires.
Feathers are a very soft, and delicate version of stimulation/sensory play making it a great tool for beginners.
Wartenberg Wheel Toys
Wartenberg Wheels are small hand held tools characterized by a pin-needle wheel that could be compared to a mini windmill.
These wheels are designed to spin and systematically provide even, continuous stimulation by the pins as it is rolled across skin. It was originally created to test skin sensivity, but had been adopted by those who enjoy sensation play.
Rolling the pins on skin can create a variety of different sensations. Wartenberg Wheels are especially versatile in sensation play as the user can easily cater to each other’s preferences by rolling faster/slower or pressing softer/harder. Unlike feathers, wartenberg wheels can tickle, tingle, itch or cause pain of different levels.
Electrostimulation Toys
Electrostimulation, also known as electro-stim or e-stim is a broad term for a category of sex toys that stimulate the user with some form of electricity. The idea is to stimulate sensitive areas (typically areas packed with nerve endings) with small pulses of electricity. These pulses can make your muscles involuntarily clench and provide a more intense stimulation and pleasure.
Many sex toys come with an electrostimulation option: dildos, anal plugs, nipple clamps, urethral plugs/dilators,and they typically offer a varying degree of shock depending on the area. The majority of e-stim sex toys have the ability to adjust the intensity of the pulse so it is not painful but provides a tingling feeling which can be increased during play.
Nuru Gel
Nuru Gel is a seaweed based gel intended for massage use. Traditionally, Nuru massages are exotic Japanese massages where the practitioner would coat themselves in Nuru Gel and slide their bodies against their clients often ending with orgasm.
Nuru Gel can be purchased in bottles of concentrated gel or in powder foam. You would mix both forms with water to create the super slippery lube like substance that you can slather yourself and/or your partner in. Imagine covering yourself in lube and sliding down each other’s bodies and you’ll understand Nuru Gel. It can be watered down to adjust for a specific/preferred consistency.
Nuru Gel is an extremely sexual experience and can be so much more than a massage. The gel can be described as removing friction from your bodies creating a very smooth, sensual glide that allows the user(s) to fully enjoy the stimulation.
It is highly recommended to use a tarp, or some kind of plastic while using Nuru Gel (some kits include them) as it is a watery gel that will get everywhere! To learn more about tarps/sheets check out Aisle 8: Sex Accessories.
Impact Toys
Impact sex toys focus on the stimulation provided by the physical impact of an object.
Paddles
Paddles are large flat boards that can be multiple materials intended to strike a large surface. Think of a pizza paddle, or a cricket bat. The larger the surface area the less physical pain (or stinging) and more pressure (impact) the toy would illicit. This is because it comes into contact with more of the body and is therefore more easily absorbed. It is recommended for beginners to start with paddles, or even a gentler fabric covered paddles and work their way up.
Some paddles like Impression Paddles have images engraved into the paddle and are intended to leave an impression in the submissive partner’s skin when spanked.
Slappers are smaller versions of paddles. They are wide, firm strips typically made of a more flexible material than paddles. To understand what a slapper would be like, imagine a thick/wide belt
Paddles are great for those who like getting spanked as it provides a great amount of impact without too much pain.
Crops
More surface area at the tip than a whip, but less than a paddle. They also provide a lot of variety as they are very controllable compared to both whips and paddles but can pack a lot of punch (if that is what you are into). Crops can be very satisfying to swing through the air, giving the user a great sense of power and control over their partner.
Crops are great for those who want a little more variety than paddling.
Flogger/Whips
Floggers, also known as whips are strips that can be made of various materials fastened to a handle used to strike an individual. Whips can vary in surface areas, some may have many strips ( called tails) converging into one handle or one spicy braided tail that is ready to be cracked!
Whips provide the most painful, and most stinging sensations and are usually reserved for more experience impact player as they can break skin.
While being potentially very painful, or even dangerous whips can also be used for a very sensual tease. A whip’s leather or suede tassels running down an erogenous zone (sensitive area) can drive a partner up the wall!
Whips are often made with leathers, suedes, metals or rubbers which all produce different sensations on the skin. They also come in various lengths to suit the user’s needs.
Whips are great for experience users who enjoy extreme versions of impact/pain play. If used incorrectly, whips (especially long single tailed whip) can do a lot of damage!
Melting Wax
Melting wax is the act of literally melting wax and dripping/drizzling it onto yourself but more often than not, a partner. This is typically done with a candlestick or a jarred candle. Wax is heated thoroughly and allowed to slightly cool (to the user’s preferred temperature) before being drizzled onto the partner/one’s self.
Melting wax is a sensational pain and pleasure act intended to stimulate the nerves with its hot temperature and slow-moving nature. Like other forms of sensational play, it can be modified by varying the height and temperature of the candle’s drip.
If you plan to explore melting wax, be sure to go for soy or paffarin body safe waxes. We recommend buying candles designed for sexual experiences rather than picking some up from the dollar store.
Wax play is not recommended for beginners as experimenting without a lot of knowledge, or carelessly can lead to some nasty burns.

Body Paints
Body paints are body-safe liquids that can be brushed or poured onto the body to create desired effects.
Body paint can be literally body paints or edible liquid treats like body chocolate you paint and enjoy with your partner.
Bodypaint is a fun, sensual, explorative experience that can be very intimate. The stimulation from delicately brushing your partner’s erogenous zones with a brush or the tips of your fingers can make them go wild with anticipation. If you feel daring (and have the edible kind) you can follow the brush with your tongue and have an extra treat yourself too!
Massage Products
What is more stimulating than a rubdown from that special someone? They are products used during massages to provide special properties: some to decrease friction, others add wonderful aromas, or even create a flavourful treat!
Massage Lotions
Massage lotions are very common as they are readily available at most drug stores and are cost-effective. Lotions are great moisturizers but not always the best option for long massages as they absorb very quickly and therefore need to be reapplied often. For a worry-free sensual massage check out Earthly Body’s “Hemp Seed Massage Lotion”.
Massage Oils
Massage oil differs from lotions as they have a thinner, more gilding consistency. Oil heats up nicely in your hands and is comfortably applied to skin without pulling or drying too quickly.
They make for a wonderful, sensual massage but aren’t without issues. Oils do not mix well with fabric, and may leave a greasy feeling afterward.
Oils are great paired with sex tarps/sheets as they save your bedsheets and still provide a great, cozy experience! Check out aisle 8: Sex accessories to learn more.
Edible Massage Oils
Many massage oil companies make edible massage oils, meaning safe for moderate consumption. These massage oils typically smell or taste like yummy treats. These add a wonderfully erotic component to the massage as the masseuse either tries to resist the powerful urges to devour their partner…or as they give in.
Please do not try to drink the bottle, I did say it is designed for moderate consumption only!
Massage Glides
Massage glides are very similar to massage oils but are created with silicone. They glide along the skin and absorb slower than oils. They tend to be pricier than glides and are not safe to consume due to the silicone content.
These also do not mix well with materials such as clothing or bedsheets. An example of a well-known body glide is Jo’s “all in one massage glide in Warming“.
Massage Candles
Massage candles are typically made from oils that harden at room temperature (oils high in saturated fatty acids such as coconut oil, or hydrogenated oils like soy).
These candles are lit to allow the oily wax to heat into their liquid form. This liquid can be semi-cooled and used to massage your partner. The oils in these wax are typically very hydrating and contain a lot of naturally nourishing ingredients!
Massage candles are fun, they can have a great aroma, add to the atmosphere and be used for a sensual massage all while being quite inexpensive. They are largely safe and great for beginners, just be sure not to use them around flammable surfaces and wait for them to cool before touching.
Nipple Sucker Toys
Nipple suckers are usually small suction cups that are pressed against the nipple to create suction. Like a pump, these suckers are intended to draw blood into the nipple engorging it. The more blood inside the nipple, the larger and more sensitive it becomes. See Calexotic’s “nipple play Advanced Nipple Suckers” for an example.
Nipple Clamp Toys
Nipple clamps are what they sound like: clamps designed to pinch the nipple. They can look like clamps, vises, or clothing pins. Depending on the model they can be spring-loaded or tightened with a screw to cater to different preferences. Gentle clamps are great for beginners as they are cheap and easily modified as preferences change.
Nipple clamps are similar to nipple suckers as they aim to stimulate the nipple while increasing its sensitivity. However, they vary as they do not create a sucking feeling but a pinching one. When the clamp is removed blood rushes to the pinched area increasing sensitivity.
Weighted nipple clamps are clamps that have been weighted down with heavy materials to create a stretching feeling as well as a pinch when worn.
If you’re really looking for a good time try vibrating nipple clamps for extra stimulation!
Nipple Sticker Toys
Nipple stickers, also known as nipple teasers or pasties are stickers placed over the nipple and/or areola that have an image, interesting shape, fancy colors or jewels on them. They come in a large variety of materials and can be matched with almost any sexy outfit!
Originating in the burlesque dancing world, these are intended to tease a partner without revealing all your cards!
Nipple tassels are nipple stickers that include hanging fabric (typically literal tassels) or feathers that can be spun and played with during teasing or intercourse. Take a look at Coquette’s “Sequined Heart Pasties With Tassels” .
Nipple Butter/Balm
Also known as nipple balm, it is a smooth lotion/balm intended to be massaged/dabbed onto the nipples. Nipple butter has two primary functions: to taste good and/or provide stimulation.
Nipple butter for taste: Some nipple butters have artificial flavoring intended to make nibbling, licking, and biting the nipple area more appealing.
Nipple butter for stimulation: Some kinds of nipple butter have various chemicals designed to make the nipples more sensitive, or tingly. This can include making them hotter or colder.
Nipple butter is great for beginners who want to gently increase their sensual playtime. They are an inexpensive way to entice your partner into some nipple play!
Sex Swing Toys
Sex swings, also known as sex slings are harnesses connected to straps or chains of various lengths intended to suspend a partner in the air for sexual purposes. One partner is secured in the sex swing, while the other partner remains free to do as they please.
Sex swings come a variety of materials from leather and chains to soft silk and nylon straps depending on preferences. Using gravity as an erotic tool, sex swings can enhance sex by allowing new positions, body access and by simply decreasing the effort involved (for some parties). Imagine not having to thrust, but have your partner swing you into them! … this definitely is not what we thought adults used swings for when we were kids.
Hammock Swings
Hammock Swings are swings that are designed to look like hammocks. These are also called slings, and they are designed to support the entire body in a large hammock-like fabric. The fabric is typically held by 4-6 straps/chains secured to a sex swing mount, or installed hooks in the wall/ceiling.
Hammock swings allow a partner to rest, fully supported in the swing but do not secure the individual into the swing meaning they could move freely.
Traditional Swings
Traditional swings are swings with 2 straps for the partner’s wrists and two for their feet. These can have a hammock-style sling but many are just 4 straps (for each limb) and a fabric bar (think of a children’s swing made of fabric) for their bum. Like the hammock swing, the fabric/straps are typically secured to a sex swing mount or installed hooks in the wall/ceiling.
Traditional swings restrain the individual as they are secured to the swing using straps/chains. They are largely supported by the middle fabric strap and the foot straps (like a stirrup). They can be more uncomfortable than the hammock-style but provide the free partner more control.
Traditional swings also allow for more body access. As a simple bar supports them rather than a full hammock of fabric the genital/anal is more accessible to the free partner. This leaves full control and complete access to the free partner.
Door Swings
Door Swings are similar to the traditional style as they typically have 2 wrist straps and 2 foot straps but can also be found with two fabric bars to better support the midsection/back. They are designed to hook onto a door’s frame rather than a sex swing mount or installed hooks.
Door swings are easy to install and require less room compared to the hardware needed for hammock and traditional swings. Door swings are limited to sitting or slanted positions unlike the previous swings where the individual could lay horizontally.
Body Swings
Body Swings are swings designed to be worn on the body. They can often look like vests with built-in leg support. They are intended to support the wearer’s partner in a suspended sitting position (like having sex standing up).
A good example of this wing would be Whip Smart’s “Body Swing” seen on the left.
Wedges
Wedges are triangle-shaped pillows of foam or high-density soft material intended to be used during sex acts. The wedge is commonly used to support the body in a variety of sex positions. Placing in under your back would heighten the pelvis for easier and/or deeper penetration. Placing it under your stomach can save some back strain when being penetrated from behind.
They come in many shapes and sizes and can even cater to specific body parts.
Sex ramps are larger versions of wedges that can accommodate the whole, or top half of the body.
They can allow for new positions, greater access to sensitive parts, deeper penetration, can even alleviate pain by providing increased support. Think of the possibilities!
Sex Benches
Sex benches are benches or tables that have straps for an individual’s arms and legs. They are intended to restrain and support the individual in various positions. Some benches are designed for certain positions only while others can be more versatile.
Sex Horses are similar to sex benches but have a large raised ‘hump’ in the middle of the bench that forces the restrained individual ‘up’. This typically creates an arch in the restrained individual’s back allowing for increased body access.
Couches
More commonly known as sex chaises, is a large lounge chair with a dip in the middle. These couches are very versatile and are used to support various positions that may be impossible on flat surfaces.
Sex couches are often created with the ability to add attachments. Common attachments may be straps or ridable dildos.
Sex Stools
Sex stools, also known as queening stools are stools designed for easy oral sex. The stools have wirey frames that allow an individual to sit while exposing the genital area.
Their partner can now position themselves under the stool, facing their partner’s exposed genitals. Some sex stools have support to accommodate the oral giver’s head/neck so they are not laying directly on the floor.
Bondage Cross
Bondage crosses, also known as St. Andrew’s crosses are designed to resemble flaying crosses. They are large ‘X’ structures with straps that allow an individual to be restrained in an upright verticle position.
These are typically made of very hard, sturdy materials like wood a metal to ensure the partner is fully subdued.
Sex Cages
Sex cages, also known as puppy cages are literal cages for an individual to lock their partners within. These are often used in role play or more extreme control play.
Sex cages can be made of metal (like a traditional cage) or woven fibers that prevent an individual from escaping (like a sock). Cages can be verticle or horizontal.
Douches/Enemas
Douches are a tool used to clean your insides. They shoot water or cleansing agents into the vaginal sphincter using a tube-like pump. They most commonly look like a balloon connected to a long tube. You can fill the balloon with clean water (or solution of choice) and inject it via the tube to rinse out the desired cavity.
Anal douches are often referred to as enemas.
Douches/Enemas are often used to remove unpleasant odors or matter within the cavity. For example, they are commonly used before anal sex to remove extra fecal matter and prevent odors.
Douches are not recommended for vaginal use as vaginas rely on their own cleaning methods and douching can disrupt this process leading to health complications.
Harnesses
Harnesses are a wearable accessory made of straps that either restrain the wearer or allow them to add attachments.
The most common harness is a strap-on harness that allows the wearer to attach a dildo. See aisle 1 for more information of strap-on dildos. These attachments can allow for various new abilities during sexual playtime.
Sex Bedding
Sex Sheets
They are literally sheet sets designed with sex in mind. They are waterproof fitted sheets that protect your bed from various messy sex acts.
These are great for individual who want long play sessions in the comfort of their own beds and those who get messy often (food play, or finishing on your partner etc.).
Sex Blankets
Sex blankets are similar to sex sheets, they are meant to protect your bed from your sexy mess. The difference is they are intended for shorter term protection. They are water proof blankets designed to be quickly thrown onto the bed before things get messy, and just as quickly removed to be washed for next time.
Sex blankets are great because they are inexpensive ways to clean up quickly. No one wants to fight over laying in the ‘wet spot’.
Sex Tarp
Like the sex blanket, the sex tarp is meant to be a quick way of containing any messes. Sex tarps are typically less comfortable compared to blankets are they are typically rubber or plastic. They are often designed for one-time use and are meant to be disposable.
Inflatable Sex Bed
These sex beds are also known as sports rings or sports beds. They are inflatable vinyl or rubber beds (or mini boxing rings) designed to keep liquids from spilling out.
Typically used during water-play, sex beds are very useful during food play and Nuru gel play. It allows the users to contain the liquid for easier play and even easier cleanup. Without a sex bed, your room may become a water slide!
Lube Applicators
Lube applicators are tubes that resemble syringes that can be loaded with lube and injected into the cavity. These applicators allow the user to insert an adequate amount of lube inside the body while preparing for playing.
They are commonly used before anal insertion as it is very difficult to get an adequate amount of lube deep inside the anus.
Materials
Whichever sex toy you choose you’ll need to pick their right material for you! Sex toy material is largely up to personal preference.
Density
Do you like hard or soft materials? Hard materials are often recommended for larger sex toys as softer toys can be too flexible for accurate insertion. You may not want a long dildo flopping around while you’re trying to insert it.
Soft toys are usually recommended for smaller sex toys that hold shape easily or that are meant to be ridden/ground against. You can also find dual-density toys that are softer on the outside but contain hard silicone inside to help retain the shape.
Skin Safe
Unfortunately, not all sex toy materials are skin safe. Make sure to always read the label so you can get a sense of what you are putting in your body! We recommend you stay away from thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), thermoplastic rubber (TPR) if you are looking for insertables and they are porous. These are the fleshy feeling materials like Cyberskin.
We also recommend steering clear from jelly toys, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) toys and vinyl toys are they may leak chemicals into your body (like phthalates).
Commonly recommended sex toy materials
Soft Materials
100% Soft Silicone
Hard Materials
100% Hard Silicone
Stainless Steel
Aluminum
Ceramic (has to be glazed and fired in a kiln)
Glass
Lucite (acrylic)
Wood (must be properly sealed)
Sex toys are very personal. They are powerful tools that allow you to explore yourself and your partner(s) in a beautifully intimate way.
When choosing a sex toy keep in mind what you are looking for:
Are you interested in a certain concept or an idea? Sometimes it’s more of an idea that gets you going than the sex toys itself.
Is a certain shape or style important?
What about a certain texture/ feeling? Are you looking to feel stretched, full, or enjoy a ribbed feeling?
Do you want attachments?
Did you want it to vibrate?
Are you looking for single or dual stimulation?
Is it intended for solo or partner play?
Is it meant to be used long-term or disposable? Many sex toys come with a disposable version. These are great ways to try out a sex toy inexpensively, or just get messy and not have to worry about clean-up.
Where to do intend to use it, at home or in public? You may want to choose something more discreet or something that includes a remote for public paly.
Which area is it intended to pleasure? For anything insertable you may want to look for a flared base for easy removal.
Sex can be an enjoyable hobby that brings you closer to yourself or to your partner, it is worth taking your time to explore and learn more about what makes you tick!
